Alumna explores the art of movement

Christine Lidvall

POETRY IN MOTION: Teacher, dancer and choreographer Christine Lidvall, '83 MA

At four years old, Christine Lidvall began her life as a dancer. Her family physician suggested that she take dance lessons because of structural problems in her feet, which set in motion Lidvall’s lifelong journey into the world of dance and movement.
“I always danced around to music like all children. Dance lessons just supported that love of movement,” recalls Lidvall.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in theatre from Northwestern University, Lidvall came to UHCL to train under Professor of Dance Janis S. Simonds and study the José Limón Technique. In 1983, she received her master’s degree from UHCL and credits Simonds for her decision to found the Chrysalis Dance Company that same year. She served as director of the dance company until 1997.
Lidvall finds many rewards in her art. She continues her work with Chrysalis as artistic associate and coordinator for the Street SmArt Dance program for youth offenders at Harris County Juvenile Probation Department in Houston.
“There are not many people who teach the arts to youth offenders. We teach approximately 36 to 50 students a year at the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department’s Youth Village facility,” notes Lidvall. “Initially, many of the youth are hesitant to work together, but you can see a positive change in them throughout the course of the program. They don’t just learn dance, they learn life skills.”
Lidvall has trained in ballet, tap, modern dance and the Alexander Technique. She began studying the Alexander Technique to help with her teaching because it emphasizes freedom from habitual patterns of movement that cause stress and promotes balance, support and coordination. She currently teaches dance and the Alexander Technique at Rice University and is a freelance choreographer. She also has a private practice in the Alexander Technique and holds workshops for many organizations including the Jung Educational Center of Houston.

Christine Lidvall studied dance at UHCL through the humanities’ theatre arts program. UHCL no longer offers an academic program in dance, but we still want to hear from the program’s alumni. Contact the Office of Alumni and Community Relations, 281-283-2021 or alumni@cl.uh.edu.
